Webinar: ‘The Role of Eastern European History in International Court of Justice (ICJ) Proceedings’, 17 May 2024, 11:00 CET

Contested memories of history have been central to proceedings before the ICJ in recent years. Russia’s justification for invading Ukraine and Ukraine’s complaint before the ICJ against Russia alleging pretextual claims of genocide are steeped in history, including contested memories of Second World War victimhood, Ukrainian self-determination, and Soviet liberation. This MEMOCRACY webinar focuses on Eastern Europe and how contested regional memories of victimhood and oppression have shaped proceedings before the ICJ, while also exploring the role of history before international courts and tribunals.

Speakers:

Iryna Marchuk, University of Copenhagen

Dmytro Koval, National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” / Truth Hounds NGO
